I've lived in a few different houses around Birmingham for a while now, but have recently moved to an apartment. I still have all my tools: Welder, grinders, wrenches, compressor, etc. . . But most of them just sit in cabinets in my kitchen and some are in storage out in Pelham. Since I just have a parking lot to work in (and it's sloped), I have many projects I've been meaning to do but keep putting off since there is no easy or comfortable place to work.
So I'm sitting here in the office and figured with this new forum, maybe we could organize some sort of way to lend out tools or work space to people that need them. For example, most of my larger tools (compressor, welder) just sit in storage 99% of the time, I'm sure there's someone out there that could get some use out of them for a weekend project or two, but don't want to go out and purchase their own. And for me, I'd really like a nice warm dry place to do work on my car!
Just throwing ideas out there while I put off work (err I mean. . . wait for some code to compile), but maybe this could help a few people out. When I was in Shanghai we had this large garage "hackerspace" that, for a monthly fee, you could join and use the warehouse/tools as needed for various small projects. Maybe an idea like that could even take off here. I'd gladly pay $$$ for just the ability to use a lift or dedicated tools for my projects.

I understand your dilemma. When I lived in Georgia a few years ago I had a shop and a 2 post lift. I hosted shop days for my buddies and for members of the local car clubs. When I moved to Alex City, my dad and I built a 40X60 shop and it's almost complete. All thats left is to pour the concrete apron out front. The shop is functional and usable, I use a couple boards to get my vette in and out for the time being.
Having said that, I'd like to get into hosting shop days again. I know it's a long ride for anyone in the B'ham area but it's better than sitting at home wishing you had a space. There's a 9K 2 post lift, compressor, welder and most any tool you'd need. The only thing I ask is for the participants to bring two consumable items as a donation. Things like WD-40, brake cleaner, shop rags, little stuff that gets used up during repairs. I've never charged anything for use, only asking that people be respectful of the property and if you break something, replace it...
Would anyone up there be interested in coming to AC for a shop day?

I like the idea of a tool sharing program, and we would be glad to promote it, but this is also at your own risk.
As a disclaimer all these interactions would have to take place as individuals.
But, if there is adequate interest, this has the possibility of being pretty helpful to a lot of folks.

I bled my clutch line yesterday and probably spent an hour just getting half my car lifted up on stands to slide under there.
